Powered pedestrian entrances
Automatic doors can make a commercial entrance easier to use where hands-free or assisted opening is appropriate. A complete system is more than an operator: the door arrangement, activation, safety sensors, control mode, access, power, signage, commissioning and maintenance all need to be considered for the people and property.
Automatic sliding or automatic swing?
An automatic sliding entrance moves one or more leaves sideways and needs a suitable clear zone for the leaves and operator. An automatic swing operator opens a hinged leaf and must account for the swept path and people approaching from either side. Existing manual doors should not be assumed suitable for conversion until the door, frame, hinges, closer, opening forces and surroundings have been assessed.
Activation and operating modes
The project may consider presence or motion sensors, push pads, access-control signals, remote devices or other activation methods. The selected controls must suit the entrance use and authorised access arrangements. Operating modes, isolation, emergency behaviour and user instructions should be agreed and handed over; they must not be improvised from a generic product description.
Safety starts with the actual users and site
Powered pedestrian doors require a risk-led specification. The approach routes, vulnerable users, door movement, trapping or impact zones, nearby walls and queuing patterns influence the protective measures. ADSA identifies BS EN 16005 as the safety-in-use standard for powered pedestrian doorsets, but London City Group must claim compliance only when the installed system, risk assessment, testing and documentation demonstrate it.
What should the automatic-door quote include?
- Door type, leaf arrangement, frame/glass and operator.
- Activation devices, safety sensors and control modes.
- Access-control, fire-alarm or other interfaces where included.
- Electrical supply and cabling responsibilities.
- Installation, commissioning, risk assessment and handover documents.
- Maintenance requirements, warranty terms and exclusions.
