Glazing specification guide
Choosing between double and triple glazing is not simply a question of adding another pane. The complete frame-and-glass system, opening size, orientation, building use, weight, threshold and installation interfaces determine whether a proposed build-up is suitable and what performance it can support.
What is the basic difference?
A double-glazed unit normally uses two panes separated by a sealed cavity. A triple-glazed unit normally uses three panes and two cavities. Exact pane types, cavity widths, coatings, gas fill, spacer and edge construction vary. Those details influence weight, thickness, light transmission and declared thermal or acoustic performance.
When might triple glazing be considered?
Triple glazing may be evaluated where the building’s thermal brief and a compatible frame system justify it. It is heavier and thicker than many double-glazed alternatives, which can affect panel sizes, hardware, operation and cost. It should not be advertised as automatically “best” without checking the complete door or window system and project calculation.
Safety, acoustic and solar-control questions
The number of panes does not decide whether safety glass is required, how impact is managed, how much sound reduction is achieved or how solar gain is controlled. Different pane types and laminates may be needed for different outcomes. Ask the responsible designer to state the required performance and the supplier to identify the proposed build-up and supporting evidence.

- Declared performance of the complete frame and glass.
- Glass build-up, thickness and weight.
- Panel or leaf size limits and compatible hardware.
- Threshold, seals, drainage and installation junctions.
- Appearance, tint, reflection and light transmission.
- Replacement, maintenance and warranty terms.
Information for a glazing quotation
Provide the opening type, dimensions, frame system if known, building use, project location and required thermal, acoustic, safety or solar-control outcomes. A quote should identify the actual glass build-up and frame—not merely say “double” or “triple”.
